How Does Emergency Tax Work in Ireland? (2026 Rules)
When you start a new job in Ireland, your employer is legally prohibited from guessing your tax rates or tax credits. Unless Revenue has issued a Revenue Payroll Notification (RPN) for that job, your employer must apply Emergency Basis tax deductions.
Emergency Tax Rates Schedule (With PPSN Supplied)
- Weeks 1 to 4: You receive the standard 20% rate band (€846.15/week in 2026), with income above this taxed at 40%. Crucially, zero tax credits are applied.
- Week 5 onwards: The standard rate cut-off is completely removed. 100% of your earnings are taxed at 40%.
- USC: Flat emergency rate of 8% is deducted on all earnings.
Emergency Tax Rates (No PPSN Supplied)
If you have not provided a valid Personal Public Service Number (PPSN), your employer must apply the 40% higher rate and 8% emergency USC immediately from Week 1.
Will I Get All My Money Back?
Yes, 100%. Emergency tax is merely a temporary withholding mechanism. Once you register the job on Revenue myAccount, your tax credits and standard rate bands apply retrospectively to the start of the tax year, and the overpayment is reimbursed in full.
Revenue.ie Statutory Rates
Calculations strictly align with the Finance Act 2025/2026 and official rate schedules published by the Irish Revenue Commissioners.
